“The 1920s was the era of the Flapper, a time where nice girls could be bad – at least in the evenings!” makeup was something that helped the women recover from the horrors of the war, and emphasize their new sense of feminine power. However not all women went for the flapper look; instead the idea of facial contouring began to gain interest.

LIPSTICK: Lips were commonly painted in the shape of a cupids bow. Lipstick became popular after the invention of the metal lipstick container was invented, in 1915. You could get it in salve, liquid and stick forums. A lip-gloss was also invented; it used bromo acid to create a red effect as it reacted with the wearers skin. Then finally the flavored lipstick was invented, with the most popular flavor being cherry.

BLUSH: Messy elixir brushes were replaced with creams, powders and liquids. It was also popular to rub in some lipsticks to the cheeks to help give them colour. This was a substitute for powdered blush that some women used in the 20’s.

EYES: The eyeliner was first introduced. There were three main looks women tried to achieve in the 20’s:

<< Harlow look, eye shadow right up to the eyebrows

<< Theda Bara Look, Soot colour above and below the eye

<< Garbo Look, painted eyelids with a dark brown eye shadow above

MASCARA: In the early 20’s women had a desire for darker fuller lashes, this was accomplished by using common household products. Vaseline was mixed with a soot or coal, to create a dark gel solution that they used as mascara. In the middle of the 20’s, mascara was available in tube, wax and liquid forms. Surprisingly there were even some waterproof formulas available. Although there were various forms of brush-on mascaras to darken the lashes, they did not provide the sculpting abilities of modern day mascara wands. However if they did wish to sculpt their lashes they would use eyelash curlers, such as the Kurlash. This was a popular tool that was used in the 20’s to help sculpt the lashes.
